Dara Torres American Swimmer 2012

Torres was born in Beverly Hills, California, the daughter of Edward Torres, a casino owner of Cuban origin, and a former model Marylu Kauder.   She grew up in Los Angeles, California, the fifth of six children and two more daughters. At age 7, Torres started following her brothers to swim practice the local YMCA and later on joins the Culver City swimming team.

She went to school for girls Westlake (now Harvard-Westlake School), and swam for the swim team under the guidance of Westlake Darlene Bible, where she developed California Interscholastic Federation records that remain to be date. As a teenager in the 1980s, she swam for the Nadadores Mission Viejo, Mission Viejo, California, under leadership of Mark Schubert, Olympic swimming coach in 2008.
