Anastasija Sevastova Latvian Tennis Star

Anastasija Sevastova is a Latvian tennis player. On January 31, 2011, she achieved her career-high WTA singles ranking of No. 36. On August 31, 2009, she claimed her highest Doubles rank of No. 195. Her biggest match to date was in the 1st Round of the 2010 China Open, where she defeated world number 7 Samantha Stosur.

CAREER:

In March 2010, Sevastova got the biggest win of her career by defeating World No. 9 Jelena Janković in the first round of the 2010 Monterrey Open. She reached the semifinals, falling to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in three sets.Anastasija Sevastova became the first Latvian to win a Sony Ericsson WTA Tour title on Saturday since Larisa Neiland won at Schenctady, New York, in 1993.

The World No. 74 defeated Arantxa Parra Santonja of Spain 6-2, 7-5 over 71 minutes in the Estoril Open final, having won 59 per cent of service points and hitting three aces. The final was delayed by five hours due to torrential rain.

Sevastova, who beat top seed Agnes Szavay and No. 7 seed Shuai Peng en route to her first singles final, converted her fourth break point opportunity in the first game of the final and went on to take a 5-0 lead before Parra Santonja avoided a bagel first-set with a service break to 30.

Sevastova played at the 2010 Estoril Open and in her first match defeated top seed Ágnes Szávay 3–6, 6–3, 6–3. She then beat veteran Kimiko Date Krumm in the second round (Date Krumm retired), Anastasia Rodionova in the quarterfinals 7–6(6), 6–2 and Shuai Peng of China 6–7(6), 6–1, 6–3 in the semifinal. In the final of the 2010 Estoril Open she beat Arantxa Parra Santonja in straight sets 6–2, 7–5. It was her first WTA Final and her first WTA Title.

In the 2011 Australian Open Sevastova upset the 21st seed Yanina Wickmayer 6–4, 6–2 en route to a fourth round matchup with World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki, which she lost in straight sets 3–6, 4–6.

Parra Santonja, who was clearly nervous in her first singles final, fell to 0-2 in the second set. But went on to win the next three games, but fell to 0/40 in the 11th game and was unable to recover.
Sevastova, 20, improved to a 17-9 record on the season and is expected to rise to No. 60 in the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Rankings on Monday. She had been making her Estoril Open debut this week

Nalbandian says he is most motivated by Davis Cup: “Very good players like Vilas, Clerc have won everything (in tennis) except the Davis Cup. So I want to win the Davis Cup.”

He says he prefers the challenge of Davis Cup over grand slams: “It’s a different pressure than the grand slams. I play better in that than everybody else.”

On why Nadal and Federer stand above the rest in the ATP: “I think they are a step over the rest – for the moment. They are completely different players from the mind. Not the game.. The difference is in the mind. From the mind, they are different from the rest.”

Nalbandian on what Federer might need to regain his #1 position: “Roger – maybe he needs motivation from somewhere else.”

David Nalbandian surgery

I was expecting this news, but still it is sad to learn that my Nalby will be out for the rest of the season. You can get more information about his injury and upcoming surgery from his official site davidnalbandian.com. It is not a secret that I am a crazy David Nalbandian fan.
And I have never had a chance to see him play live:-( But this year I thought would be THE Year. We were planning to go to Roland Garros to see him, and now I don’t have another favorite for who I feel I am ready to travel to Paris. Good Luck David with the surgery and the recovery. Tennis Info Blog will miss you!

Dinara Safina Great Tennis Starts Pics

The French Open has meant victory for Russian tennis star Dinara Safina who defeated compatriot Maria Sharapova with a 6-7 (6-8) 7-6 (7-5) 6-2 score in the fourth round.

Sharapova, although the top seed, had been struggling in earlier matches and many tennis commentators and fans were tipping Safina as the favourite to win.

Dinara SafinaHaving missed two set points in the opener, Safina saved a match point in the second set and then managed to gain the upper hand in the final decider.

Following the game a triumphant Dinara Safina said: "I knew I could beat her but I put too much pressure on myself and was way too passive. I was too dependent on her and I was 2-5 down in the second set and facing a match point.

"But I hit a winner on her match point and it changed things. Before I was just running and playing the ball back. But I had to focus on myself and not wait for her mistakes and let her dictate."

Maria Sharapova entered the French Open as the new world number one tennis player but she has never enjoyed clay and found it hard in her previous matches last week.
Or can Dinara Safina sink lower than a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Kim Clijsters in the first round of the Aussie? Her loss marks a first for a former world no. 1 at a Major. In 2000, former world no. 1 Monica Seles lost to Martina Hingis by the same score at Miami. But as other former female greats have showed us, there’s farther to fall. May 05, 2008 — The ATP World Tour is losing millions of dollars because of steep legal expenses tied to a lawsuit brought by one of its tournaments against the men’s circuit, tennis sources said.

Last year, the sources said, the ATP lost $5 million, and it is projected to lose $6.4 million this year.

In 2005 and 2006, the ATP earned $9.2 million combined, so the losses mark a significant shift in fortunes for the men’s tour. They also come as the ATP has been criticized by top players, the U.S. Tennis Association and representatives of top events on the tour. The ATP is in the midst of a tumultuous remake of its calendar, as well as its image, and the fallout has left bruised feelings and depleted coffers.
