Born in Tovar, MÃ©rida State, Venezuela, Santana was signed by the Houston Astros as a non-draft free agent in 1995. Selected by the Florida Marlins from Houston in the 1999 rule 5 draft, Santana was traded to the Twins. Finally, he made his debut in the 2000 season. Santana is tough on both righthanded and lefthanded hitters. He works quickly and throws a 95 mph (153 km/h) fastball, a hard slider and a changeup. Lindsay Davenport's 14-year professional tennis career included more than 50 pro tournament wins and three major titles. Tall and steady, with a power game suited to grass and hard courts, Davenport eventually developed into something of a grande dame in a sport often dominated by teens and sudden sensations. Davenport played her first tournament as a pro in 1993, when she herself was just 16. Three years later won the gold medal at the Atlanta Summer Olympics of 1996. She won all three of her career Grand Slam titles in the period 1998 through 2000: the U.S. Open in 1998, Wimbledon in 1999, and the Australian Open in 2000. She also had success in women's doubles, winning at Wimbledon, the U.S. Open and the French Open in that format. Davenport announced in December of 2006 that she was pregnant; although she did not formally retire, she told ESPN that "I can't imagine playing again."

Cristie Kerr had her sights set on becoming the No. 1-ranked female in the world for a long time.
She went old-school Tiger Woods at the LPGA Championship last weekend, winning in dominant fashion, to finally earn that No. 1 ranking.
Kerr’s performance was reminiscent of Woods at Augusta in 1997 or Pebble Beach in 2000. After sharing the first-round lead, she was five clear after two rounds, eight ahead through three and won by an “obscene” – her word – 12 strokes.

She had two other telling quotes on Sunday after wrapping up the victory, “It’s a dream performance” and “I didn’t limit myself.”

Those phrases suit her weekend to a “T”. She posted rounds of 68-66-69-66 while setting the LPGA Tour record for lowest score (269) in any of the four major championships. Her 19-under total also set a tour record for lowest score in relation to par in a major.

The dominating performance allowed her to jump from the fifth spot to the top of the women’s world rankings, which started in 2006. She became the first American woman to be ranked No. 1.
